NATIONAL CEMETERIES WEEK 12th-20th May 2018
Not just for a week but all year round many Cemetery Friends throughout the UK work hard to support council owners to keep local cemeteries tidy and safe. National Cemeteries Week, organised by the National Federation of Cemetery Friends, provides an opportunity to highlight this work and appeal for more volunteers. Cemetery Friends groups research the history of graves, lead tours, write publications and engage with the local community. The Friends of Lawnswood Cemetery are members of The National Federation of Cemetery Friends. We offer an annual membership for £5.00 per annum, which gives members regular information through newsletters, visits to other local cemeteries and an annual afternoon tea party. Anyone, whether a member or not, can volunteer to come to the monthly Action Day to help keep the cemetery looking its best for those who visit and who are buried, cremated or remembered in the cemetery.
It is always worth a visit to Lawnswood Cemetery at any time of the year. There is now a self guided walks leaflet, available from the waiting room below the Friends of Lawnswood Cemetery notice board, which will take you round some of the significant graves and monuments in the cemetery, including the Grade 11 listed Columbarium, chapels and crematorium and the four Grade 11 listed memorials. Pick up a free guide leaflet and walk round this magnificent treasure of Leeds ! Call in to say hello to the volunteers working there, on the first Saturday of every month. Or come along and help if you like gardening and have a morning a month to spare- it is a very friendly group and refreshments are provided. The group meets at 10am in the car park opposite the main entrance on the first Saturday of every month.
